ECONOMIC UNION OF MONTPELLIER ( FRANCE )1930 With the shortage of money in the French economy, a union or co-operative was started in Montpellier ( in southern France ) that issued their own 100 Francs banknotes in 1930. This magnificent note features a beautiful city scape with the Peyrou Promenade ( originally created to accomodate the equestrian statue of Louis XIV ) in the foreground, the town, cathedral and mountains in the background. A cherubhovers above the head of a winged Athena and a seated Mercury adorns the right side of the note. Other elements include the city’s arms in the upper right and the national symbol of the Republique Francais in the lower left, complete with the rooster. These were printed by Imprimerie B. Arnaud, of Lyon and Paris and were redeemed at a variety of local establishments, often with a rubber stamp. Each has the 100 Francs amount punched out with a serial number left intact ( both sides show the same basic design ). The serial number may be different than the one shown, but the quality is the same or better.
