REVOLUTIONARY WATERMARKED & EMBOSSED 5 LIVRES ASSIGNAT of 1793 with PRINTED SIGNATURE of ANDRE MICHAUX, BOTANIST ( MOST NOTED for his WORKS on NORTH AMERICAN FLORA ) This payment certificate may have been used in French America ( primarily Canada, Detroit, New Orleans & St. Louis ), but was as a direct result of the American Revolution ( by 1790 France was bankrupt ). It was backed by loans ( or assignments, similar to a mortgage ) against national lands ( or the land that they chose to confiscate, mostly from the church ). This note represents the French Revolutionary dating system ( 10 Brumaire An II of the French Republic = October 31, 1793 ) and was printed on spectacularly embossed paper . Pick Catalog # A76.
