In 1828 King Miguel I with support of the Holy See, returned to Portugal to take his throne back. His older brother Pedro Emperor of Brazil forfeited his right to be the king of Portugal under the National Constitution thus his daughter and Miguel’s niece (not a legitimate heir to the throne under the Portuguese constitution). This was the start of the Liberal Wars also known as the War of 2 Brothers.
