1850’s PORT WINE SEAL MATRIX ALEXANDER THOMSON at BLACKHALL, SCOTLAND Glass wine bottles were ‘sealed’ by placing a molten blob of glass or sealing wax on the shoulder of a bottle and impressing it with a seal (depicted as a mirror image / the design being incuse or cut into the metal), thus indicating what product it contained. This seal is about an inch (2.25 centimeters) in diameter and isattached to a wood handle (similar to that shown in the picture), standing approximately 4 inches ( 10 centimeters ) high. Thisis fromAlexander Thomson (I believe prior to partnering with Lauderin the mid 1860’s)with the inscription ALEX R THOMSON PORT BLACKHALL. The edge lip bears slightchip(shown at 630 on our picture)and there are remnants of red waxin the edge lip.
