SPANISH AMERICAN WAR PHILIPPINES HERO MEDAL – ADMIRAL GEORGE DEWEY & USS OLYMPIA
In 1898 Admiral George Dewey set out on the USS Olympia for Manila Bay in the Philippines with order to engage the Spanish. Within 6 hours Dewey completely subdued the enemy with the loss of only a single American life. Parades & welcome committees were set up all around for his return. Souvenirs, such as this copper medal ( 1 1/4 inch ) were also a big part of the fanfare. This one shows Admiral Dewey on the front, and on the reverse the words “Welcome to our Hero” along with a view of the USS Olympia.
