WORLD WAR II ALLIED OCCUPATION of ALGERIA / OPERATION “TORCH” (1942) NOTE of 20 FRANCS
The American landings in Algeria (which was technically a part of France – unlike say, Morocco which was a Protectorate) was somewhat mixed as there were French troops loyal to both the ‘Free’ French (Charles de Gaulle) as well as to the Nazi Vichy Government under Petain. Interestingly, there were no Germans in Algeria in 1942.
