HURRICANE ‘IAN’ COLLAPSE SANIBEL ISLAND (FLORIDA) CAUSEWAY (of SEPTEMBER 2022) OLD 22 MM BRASS TOKEN of 1987 with TARNISH – NEVER RELEASED (back & front are the same design)

35th ANNIVERSARY (per chance)

This token we offer here was never put into circulation, as, according to the September 1992 issue of ‘The Fare Box’ these were used internally by toll collectors, not by the persons paying the causeway toll.

As early as 1912 a car ferry serviced Sanibel, but the idea of establishing a bridge was controversial in that the locals feared the onslaught of tourism. In due course there was too much pressure on the ferry service and after several hurricanes and the wildfire of 1955 an easier way to get on and off the island was needed. It took about a year and a half to complete the Causeway (and the original 3 bridges) which was opened in 1963. This group was found partially submerged off the causeway area which may explain their oxidation. They ain’t beauties (but they are unusual).

Measures approximately 22 MM – We show several, but we’ll give you the best we have available or you can order by letter under the token if there is a specific one you want.
